Gillette Castle, on a hillside above the Connecticut River, was built by actor/writer/director William Gillette, and completed in 1919. He lived there until his death in 1937. Now it’s a state park.

Aha! That was the clue I needed: I was wondering when you posted the Connecticut River shot yesterday if you were anywhere near Essex.
Heh…you’re right. I took the Essex Steam Train (see previous posts) ride to get to the boat. The boat goes from Deep River Landing, past Gillette Castle, up to the East Haddam swing bridge, and then back again.
Aw man, that was exactly the field trip I took in the 6th grade, in 1973! It was the first time my dad allowed me to tote along his precious Pentax Spotmatic, loaded up with a roll of Kodachrome…I know I have those slides _somewhere_.
