Waiting for the drawbridge to open so that we can enter the inner harbor of Medemblik. The red & greed combination of lights means that the bridge will be opening soon.

A small canal passing between backyards in the small Dutch town of Medemblik. With such an extensive network of canals, nearly everyone can dock a little boat behind their house.

The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen shows how the Dutch lived and fished in the late 1800’s and early 1900s. At that time, the Zuiderzee was open to the North Sea. In the 1900s, a dam was constructed, making it into a lake, known now as the IJsselmeer.

A beautiful day for a sail on the Markermeer. This is the southern portion of the IJsselmeer, part of the “wet heart of the Netherlands.” Much of the land surrounding the IJsselmeer has been reclaimed, resulting in formerly underwater land becoming livable and protected from flooding, as a result of huge dam and dike construction projects.
